WILDLIFE

Killdeer love to make their nests in the roadbed of the railroad tracks.  The left hand photo above shows how well their eggs are camouflaged in the rocks of the roadbed.  It is unusual for us to find the baby birds after they hatch.  In the right hand photo above you will see the four Killdeer babies right after they have hatched.  The baby on the right is still wet from the egg shell.  The unusual trait about the Killdeer birds is they leave the nest almost immediately.  The day after the last bird hatched, they were running along the track with their mother.

Every year we have fawns born in our gardens.  They get very used to Stephen and Cheryl going for walks.  They watch us, but stay where their mothers left them unless we practically step on them.
